I just choked on a piece of egg for about 8 seconds and the whole time all I was thinking was “whoa, humans are the only creatures who evolved to be able to choke on their food because language development was so important”
Alright stop right there. Take a look at the first part of that sentence.
You’re telling folks that their equality, their status as a fully formed human being, is something they have to earn, something you have to approve of, something they are not automatically entitled to.
I don’t care who you are, who you’re talking to, or what the second half of that sentence is. You’re wrong.
“I guess I never caught that bug where you’re only supposed to care about your own country or your own local area. To me, 49 decapitated Mexicans is just as bad as 49 decapitated Americans and I know if there were 49 decapitated Americans in the street anywhere in the country, it would be like 9/11 all over again. It would be the largest news story for years - if it just happened once - but it happens time and time again in Mexico… and I guess as long as Americans aren’t getting decapitated, apparently the rest of the country, and especially our media, couldn’t give a damn and that’s part of what’s sick and wrong with this country’s media. And so, we march on as if nothing is wrong, as if everything is hunky dory, as if the war on drugs makes sense and hasn’t created these grotesque gangs that grow larger and more grotesque by the day - and it’s not because of the drugs. It’s because the drugs are illegal.”—

Hawkins, the guy who wrote this post, is a fellow Mainer who I’ve never actually met but runs in the same circles as I. He is an atheist- an antitheist more specifically, and often opens discussions on facebook which I’m generally fond of. Sometimes I feel his approach can be a little in-your-face, but not to the point where I’m turned off enough to unfollow him. His most recent blog post I am particularly pleased by. Micheal Hartwell, a blogger who calls himself and his blog “Young, Hip & Conservative”, is someone I would consider an actual acquaintance and know on a personal level. Hartwell has recently moved to Boston to become a journalist, which is particularly unsettling due to how very often he resorts to logical fallacies such as straw man, begging the question, and ad hominum in his writing. He is also blissfully unaware of his privilege. I believe that Hartwell needs to be exposed for this, especially in hopes that other people will begin to stand behind Hawkins and I. We must challenge him and hold him accountable for what Hartwell considers to be sound writing. Just look at the way he talks to his “friends”:
Hartwell’s entire blogs-worth of logical fallacies this way. I suggest playing “find the racism and white male privilege” drinking game if you’re looking to make it a good time.
